So you’ve clicked on option one.
That means you know little about fostering and want to learn more. We hope the following information will inspire you to make a decision about fostering. If you like what you read, you can find out more by following the journey of person two and three, where we talk about the impact you can make and the ways LiKa will support you every step of the way.

What is foster care?

Foster care is a way of providing family life for children who cannot live with their own parents. There can be many reasons why children are no longer able to live with their families. Usually it’s because parents have significant problems that mean they’re unable to care for their children. Often children will return home once problems have been resolved and their parents are able to look after them again. Find out more at FosterlineFostering Legislation in the U.K and Fostering Services: National Minimum Standards.

Foster carers are people who care for these children and young people. LiKa foster carers are carefully selected, trained and equipped with lots of new skills that help them look after foster children in a way that helps them feel happy and safe.

What does it do?

It provides the opportunity for a child to experience a stable home life through foster care and can have a huge impact, creating a more positive future and enabling them to fulfil their potential.

What are foster children like?

Foster children, like all children, have their own individual and unique behaviours influenced by their age (0-17), ability, culture, religion, experiences and development. They may be single children or sibling groups of two or more. Many of the children will have family members with whom they need to keep in contact with.

Will they be difficult to care for?

Many foster children will be learning to deal with painful experiences and this may mean they reject love or present challenging behaviours. With the right support and training from LiKa, these behaviours can be overcome and your foster child helped to feel stable, safe and ready to receive care and love and have fun.

Whether you are single, with a partner, lesbian, gay or straight; you are employed, self employed or unemployed; 21 years old or in retirement, we welcome applications from all caring families. To be a good foster carer you need to be a good communicator, have a sense of fun and ability to work through challenges.

To become a foster carer you will undergo a fostering assessment, which takes 4-6 months to complete. There are a number of different types of fostering, so this assessment process will determine the one that suits you and your lifestyle. Your very own supervising social worker (SSW) will be with you every step of the way.

At LiKa, we believe it’s the support and supervision that will make the difference in a successful placement. Supervision isn’t just about looking at problems, its about opening up ways of working creatively. We therefore believe supervision and training is key to our foster carers development, learning and support. This support is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

You will be paid a weekly amount of up to £550 for each child placed with you. The weekly allowance will enable you to cover the needs of each child living with you. The Government introduced an income tax exemption for foster carers with an income below a set level, so this shouldn’t affect any benefits you receive. LiKa Family Fostering also provides 3 weeks’ paid respite for all our foster carers. Find out more about finance here.

The big difference is that LiKa carers are provided with specialist training that enables them to become skilled professionals, using therapeutic ideas to create positive change in children’s lives. Just as our carers care for their children, our supervisors care for our foster carers. This brings the same family atmosphere throughout the entire system.
