Our Approach

Lika is a therapeutic foster care agency
following Systemic Family Therapy principles

As a foster carer you have an incredible opportunity to help a young person transform their life. That’s why all Lika foster carers receive extensive training in the principles of Systemic Family Therapy.

Systemic therapy is based on the idea that understanding what influences the way a person acts and thinks, and responding with the right techniques, can help them develop new and positive patterns that can be life-changing.

It’s a proven, evidence-based model of intervention based on building stronger relationships. It’s an approach that faces challenges head-on, without focusing on blame. It’s an approach we know works because we see our foster carers and our professional team achieve inspirational change with it every single day.

systemic principles

Explained in 5 Simple Steps

1.Relationships

Everyone is part of a network (or system) of relationships – for example, our family, friends and community. This system influences how we see and behave in the world.

2.Patterns
We all have entrenched patterns of behaviour within those relationships. Some patterns are healthy; some are less so.
3.Understanding
If we can recognise these patterns, we can begin to understand the influences behind them. (This is where therapeutic techniques come in.)
4.Curiosity
Through understanding why we think, feel and behave the way we do, we can find new and healthier approaches to our relationships.
5.Change
Developing and practicing these different approaches can create new, healthier and happier patterns in our relationships. (This can be absolutely life-changing.)

What Ofsted says

“(Lika) delivers a therapeutic package of life-story work, talking therapy and other aspects of therapeutic parenting to children. This has enabled the children to better understand and name their feelings and emotions … As a result, children gain an understanding of their differing emotions and are less likely to randomly act out in a negative way.”

What you can
expect from us

Lika is a therapeutic agency, so every decision we take is based on systemic principles. That means relationships, openness and honesty are at the heart of everything we do.

Lika foster carers receive extensive training in Systemic Family Therapy principles and therapeutic parenting techniques.

It’s similar to the training a newly qualified social worker receives (although not quite as technical) — so you’ll be fully prepared for your first placement and be viewed as a professional foster carer in your own right.

  • Culture of transparency and kindness
  • Extensive training in Systemic Family Therapy
  • 24/7 access to professional and peer support
  • Stable agency leadership and a clear purpose
  • Excellent follow-up and feedback.
  • Specialist training tailored to your specific care situation
  • Collaborative approach to problem-solving
  • Thoughtful matching of foster carer and young person
  • Training and support for everyone in your household
  • Fully responsive support, not one-size-fits-all solutions

What our carers say

“They help connect your understanding of what is going on for a child to their behaviour… This understanding keeps foster carers focused on the task of effecting positive change, thus helping us to keep on going when it gets tough.”
